Top Mexican Drinks that pair well with XLNT Tamales

XLNT Tamales are a wonderful addition to any meal. Many people eat them for breakfast, lunch, dinner or even snacks. Many side dishes and extras complement XLNT tamales, but what makes them a meal are the perfect Mexican drinks.

Cold Mexican Drinks

Most juices make wonderful additions to tamales for breakfast, but you may want something a bit stronger when you are eating lunch or dinner.

Drinks With Alcohol

Margaritas on a hot summer day!

Some nice dinner wines go well with tamales, including:

  • Sangria: A traditional Spanish drink that works well with citrus flavors

  • Tempranillo or Rioja wine: A full-bodied red wine from Spain

  • Chardonnay: A classic choice

  • Off-dry Riesling: A slightly sweet white wine

  • Lambrusco: A bubbling red wine, usually on the sweeter side

Mixed drinks also go well with XLNT tamales. Margaritas are a popular choice. You can mix them any way you want, but some say the traditional way is the best. Margaritas are usually made with tequila, triple sec or Cointreau, lime juice, and simple syrup. You can add flavored syrup instead of simple syrup or whole fruit to change the flavor. Serve this drink with rock salt on the rim of a margarita glass.

Some other mixed Mexican drinks you might want to consider are:

Michelada!

  • Michelada: A light Mexican tomato based beer cocktail with lime juice, spices and hot sauce

  • Smoky Basil Oaxacan Mezcal Cocktail: A smoky mezcal mixed with fresh basil

  • Paloma: Tequila mixed with a citrus soda such as grapefruit or orange and a lime wedge

  • Mezcalita: A margarita with mezcal rather than tequila

  • Mexican beer: A perfect pairing for XLNT tamales

  • Mexican Mojito: Swap out rum for a smooth tequila

You could also do a take on a mule or a Bloody Mary by switching out the standard alcohol with tequila, adding a splash of citrus or a dash of cayenne.

These Mexican drinks will pair well with either chicken or beef XLNT tamales.

Drinks Without Alcohol

Although drinks with alcohol are great, sometimes you want something that doesn't contain alcohol. Here are some great ones that don't have the kick.

•       Agua de Jamaica: This drink is hibiscus flower tea mixed with mint, cinnamon and lime juice.

•       Cucumber Agua Fresca: This is made with blended cucumber, lime juice and mint. You can add strawberries or other fruit to this drink for more flavor.

•       Mangonada: This sweet and salty drink is made with mango, mango nectar, chili lime seasoning, chamoy and lime juice.

You can modify most Mexican drinks with other flavors to suit your tastes and the type of tamales you are serving.

Hot Mexican Drinks

Some people prefer hot drinks with their tamales. Some suggestions on hot drinks are:

•       Mexican Hot Chocolate: This twist on traditional hot chocolate adds cinnamon and cayenne.

•       Horchata: This drink is made with ground almonds, cinnamon, vanilla and sugar. However Horchata can be prepared chilled with ice as well.

Hot drinks are great for breakfasts and cold days.
